A rich, fudgy centre with lots of malt flavours await in these Malted Chocolate Brownies with Maltesers. The malted flavour comes from a combination of Malteser chocolates and Horlicks malted powder. This is found in the hot chocolate section of the supermarket (or on Amazon).

The malted milk powder is used in place of cocoa powder. This means that these are a little less rich than a classic Brownie. That said, they are by no means inferior. Malt and chocolate pair really well, so these are dreamy. For a more cake-like brownie, bake for an extra 5-10 minutes.

The trick to perfect brownies is mixing melted butter and sugar for a good amount of time. Ideally, you’ll want a stand mixer or a good handheld whisk (like this one). Make sure the melted chocolate has cooled a little before adding it into the mixture to prevent it from cooking the eggs. A great trick to smash your Maltesers is to open the bag just slightly before bashing it with a rolling pin.

For these Malted Chocolate Brownies with Maltesers, I use a basic 8′ square pan (I like this one), a simple shortbread and my classic brownie batter recipe. Ingredients

  • 170 g Butter Melted
  • 100 g Light Brown Sugar
  • 100 g Granulated Sugar
  • 2 Medium Eggs
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 100 g Dark Chocolate Melted
  • 90 g Plain Flour
  • 32 g Sachet Malted Hot Drink Powder e.g. Horlicks
  • 102 g Pack Maltesers Crushed

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Line an 8" square baking tin.
  • In a small bowl, break up the dark chocolate and melt in the microwave in 20 second intervals, stirring in between to make sure it doesn’t burn.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together butter and both sugars for 3-5 minutes. Add in the eggs, one at a time and mixing in between. Add the vanilla and mix again.
  • Now, add the chocolate slowly (check it first, to make sure it isn’t so hot that it will cook the eggs) and combine once again.
  • Gently fold in the flour and malted hot drink powder. Add the maltesers and combine. Pour the batter into the prepared tin and bake for 30-35 minutes. Let cool on a wire rack. Once cooled, slice and serve.
