If you are looking for a dessert that feels indulgent, nostalgic, and a little bit magical, New Orleans Praline Brownies are the answer. Imagine a rich, fudgy brownie base topped with a sweet, nutty praline layer that melts in your mouth. It is the best of two Southern classics combined into one unforgettable treat.

My husband visits New Orleans occasionally for work, and I always request a gift of praline upon his return! Every time I visit with him, you can be sure I’m visiting every single store selling it. And, did you know lots of hotels in the city will gift these in the room when you arrive? A super cute touch!

These brownies are perfect for parties, holidays, or simply when you want to bring a taste of New Orleans into your kitchen. The combination of gooey chocolate and caramel-like praline is the kind of dessert that turns heads and has everyone reaching for seconds. Best of all, they are surprisingly beginner friendly and easier to make than they look.

New Orleans Praline Brownies

What Makes Them โ€œNew Orleansโ€ Praline Brownies?

Pralines are one of the most iconic sweets of New Orleans. Traditionally made with sugar, butter, cream, and pecans, they are cooked into a soft, candy-like confection that is rich and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Walking through the French Quarter, you can smell them being made in candy shops, with their signature aroma of caramelized sugar and roasted nuts.

New Orleans Praline Brownies take that beloved candy and pair it with the deep, chocolatey goodness of a brownie. The praline layer sits right on top, adding a sweet crunch and nutty flavor that perfectly balances the dense, fudgy base. It is a combination that celebrates both Southern tradition and the universal love of chocolate.

WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING THE BEST BROWNIES, HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND:

  1. Quality Ingredients: Always use high-quality ingredients in your brownie recipe. This includes using good quality chocolate, cocoa powder, and fresh eggs. It will make a noticeable difference in the taste and texture of the brownies.
  2. Donโ€™t Overmix: When combining the ingredients, be gentle and avoid overmixing the batter. Overmixing can lead to a denser and tougher texture. Mix until the ingredients are just combined.
  3. Proper Pan Size: Use the recommended pan size mentioned in the recipe. Using a smaller or larger pan can affect the baking time and the texture of the brownies. For fudgy and moist brownies, an 8ร—8-inch square baking pan is usually recommended.
  4. Do Not Overbake: Keep a close eye on the brownies while they are baking and avoid overbaking them. A slightly underbaked brownie will be fudgy and moist, while an overbaked one can turn out dry. Insert a toothpick into the center โ€“ if it comes out with a few moist crumbs, the brownies are done.
  5. Let Them Cool: Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan before cutting and serving. This helps them to set and ensures that they hold their shape. It also allows the flavors to develop fully.
  6. Experiment with Additions: Feel free to get creative with your brownie recipe by changing up the chocolate chips/chocolate chunks, or by adding nuts or fruit. Just make sure not to overload the batter, as it may affect the texture.

Remember, practice makes perfect when it comes to baking brownies. Donโ€™t be afraid to make tweaks and adjustments to the recipe to suit your preferences. You can totally shift the frosting quantity for more or less, just do what suits you!ย

Why These New Orleans Praline Brownies Are Worth Making

Brownies on their own are a classic crowd-pleaser. But adding a praline topping takes them to another level. Here are a few reasons you should bake these brownies at least once:

  • Flavor contrast: The rich chocolate balances beautifully with the sweet praline topping.
  • Texture layers: You get chewy brownie, smooth praline, and crunchy pecans all in one bite.
  • Visual appeal: The glossy, nut-studded praline topping makes the brownies look bakery ready.
  • Crowd favorite: These always stand out on dessert tables because they feel a little fancier than a plain brownie.

They are perfect when you want a dessert that is both approachable and impressive.

Beginner Friendly But Special

At first glance, pralines might sound complicated. Candy making can be intimidating, especially for beginner bakers. The good news is that the praline layer for these brownies is far simpler than traditional candy. It cooks quickly on the stove, gets poured over the baked brownies, and then sets into a beautiful caramel-like layer.

The steps are straightforward and forgiving, making this a great introduction to praline flavors without the stress of full-on candy making. Even if you have never made pralines before, you can absolutely master praline brownies.

Tips for the Perfect Brownie Base

Before you add praline on top, you want to make sure your brownie base is just right. Here are some tips to ensure fudgy, chocolatey brownies every time:

  1. Do not overbake: The key to moist brownies is removing them from the oven when the center still looks slightly soft. They will finish setting as they cool.
  2. Use good cocoa powder or chocolate: The brownie base is half the dessert, so quality matters. Dark cocoa or a mix of melted chocolate and cocoa makes for the richest flavor.
  3. Do not overmix the batter: Overmixing develops gluten, which leads to dense brownies instead of fudgy ones. Stir until just combined.
  4. Line your pan with parchment: This makes it easier to lift out the brownies for clean cuts.

Getting the base right means your praline topping has the perfect foundation.

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

There are no specialist ingredients or equipment required for this bake. I can find everything I need at my local supermarket or grocery store. Also, I use a standard 8 inch square tin for almost all of my traybake recipes for ease. If you do want to convert to 9 inch, youโ€™ll need to play with the quantities a little or they will be too thin. To line a square baking tin, cut two pieces of baking paper that are just narrower than the width of the tin (less than 8 inches wide). Then place one on top of the other in opposite directions, so that all four edges of the tin are covered. This will make removing the bake so much easier!

  • Dark/Semi-Sweet Chocolate, Melted
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Light Brown Soft Sugar
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Large Free Range Eggs
  • Vanilla Extract
  • All Purpose (Plain) Flour
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Heavy Cream
  • Pecans, Chopped

The Praline Layer

The praline topping is what transforms these brownies into something extraordinary. Made with butter, sugar, cream, and pecans, it cooks into a smooth, golden mixture that gets poured over the cooled brownies. As it sets, it creates a luscious, slightly chewy layer that contrasts beautifully with the chocolate base.

Some tips for success with the praline layer:

  • Use fresh pecans: Since pecans are the star, make sure they are fresh for the best flavor. Stale nuts can ruin the topping.
  • Toast the pecans: Lightly toasting pecans before adding them to the praline mixture brings out their flavor and adds crunch.
  • Work quickly: The praline mixture sets fast once it comes off the heat. Have your brownies ready to pour it over.
  • Spread gently: Use a spatula to spread the topping evenly before it firms up.

The result is a glossy, golden-brown topping that looks just as good as it tastes.

Serving Suggestions

New Orleans Praline Brownies are indulgent on their own, but you can dress them up for special occasions:

  • Serve warm with ice cream: A scoop of vanilla or butter pecan ice cream takes them to the next level.
  • Cut into small squares: The brownies are rich, so bite-sized portions are perfect for parties.
  • Pair with coffee: The sweetness of the praline is balanced beautifully with a cup of hot coffee.
  • Drizzle with chocolate: For extra flair, add a drizzle of melted chocolate over the praline topping before it sets.

They are versatile enough to work as a casual weeknight dessert or as the star of a holiday table.

When to Make New Orleans Praline Brownies

The beauty of this recipe is that it fits so many occasions:

  • Holidays: Thanksgiving and Christmas are perfect times to showcase pecan desserts.
  • Birthdays: A tray of praline brownies makes a unique alternative to traditional cake.
  • Potlucks: These brownies travel well and always stand out on a dessert table.
  • Gifting: Wrapped in a tin or box, praline brownies make a thoughtful homemade gift.
  • Everyday treats: Sometimes you do not need an occasion to enjoy a praline brownie.

No matter the setting, praline brownies feel festive and special.

Storing and Freezing

Because of the praline topping, storing these brownies properly is important.

  • Room temperature: Keep them in an airtight container for up to three days.
  • Refrigeration: For longer storage, refrigerate them for up to a week. Let them come to room temperature before serving for the best texture.
  • Freezing: You can freeze the brownies before adding the praline topping. Bake the brownies, cool completely, and freeze in a well-wrapped slab. When ready to serve, thaw, then add the praline topping fresh.

This way, you can plan ahead for events without compromising the texture of the praline.

How to Make Them Gluten Free or Dairy Free

Praline brownies are easy to adapt for dietary needs:

  • Gluten free: Substitute a 1:1 gluten free baking flour blend for the flour in the brownies.
  • Dairy free: Use dairy free margarine and coconut cream in place of butter and cream.
  • Nut free: While pralines are traditionally made with pecans, you can use sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds for a nut-free variation.

These adjustments keep the spirit of the dessert while making it accessible to more people.

Why These Brownies Are Pinterest Perfect

If you are a visual baker or love sharing your creations online, praline brownies are made for Pinterest.

  • Eye-catching layers: The contrast between dark chocolate and golden praline is stunning.
  • Unique twist: Brownies are popular, but praline brownies stand out as something special.
  • Beginner friendly: Readers love recipes that look fancy but are achievable.
  • Seasonal appeal: Perfect for fall and holiday boards, but versatile enough for year-round inspiration.
