Jump to RecipeThis Double Chocolate Banana Cake with Chocolate Frosting is double dreamy – light and fluffy chocolate frosting tops a moist chocolate banana cake. I love a mild flavoured banana cake, so the combination of chocolate creates a fabulous bake! This comes together really easy, and the banana cake recipe is super simple and delicious in itself!
With any banana bread, the key to success is a good amount of liquid and really ripe bananas. The batter includes a little melted milk chocolate and cocoa powder. The fluffy frosting really finishes the job – adding a rich, creamy chocolate layer.
When making the cake, I like to really mash up the bananas so they aren’t sporadic ‘clumps’ through the batter. This is definitely personal preference though, so feel free to only go as far as you like. If you like a little more texture, leave the bananas more whole. The final texture is cake-like, moist and a light crumb. This pairs perfectly with the whipped chocolate frosting.
Even if you’re not a huge banana lover, I think these have the ability to convert. The amount of banana means the flavour is there but baked and sweet, so it is less ‘in your face’. Make sure to use very ripe bananas. Bananas that are starting to brown/getting REALLY brown are the best as they are the sweetest. I sometimes buy bananas and let them sit on the counter for a while specifically for this purpose.
A perfect chocolate buttercream for me has minimal cocoa powder. I truly do not enjoy a strong cocoa powder flavour in any kind of baking. The chocolate frosting here is made using melted dark chocolate. This gives a lighter colour and flavour but that just means the banana still really gets to shine through!

TIPS FOR TOP TIER Double Chocolate Banana Cake with Chocolate Frosting
- Butter: Make sure your butter is fully melted – this gives that shiny top and dense texture
- Sugars: Both brown and white sugars are needed for the best texture and flavour. The light brown sugar is what makes them squidgy and dense.
- Bananas: Use the ripest bananas possible for the best banana flavour! They should be beyond the point you’d actually like to eat (going brown/black).
- Bake Time: These will need a good 30 minutes, and may look a tiny little bit wobbly in the centre but that’s needed for that dense centre.
For these Double Chocolate Banana Cake with Chocolate Frosting, I use a basic 8′ square pan (I like this one). I also recommend a good stand mixer or high speed mixer (like this one).
