Savory Ham & Cheese Bake (Use up Leftover Bread)

Savory Ham and Cheese Bake

If you have any leftover or slightly stale bread in your kitchen, this Savory Ham and Cheese Bake is the perfect way to turn it into something mega delicious. Mine is made with hot dog buns, ham, cheese, and a simple egg custard, but the recipe is really versatile and you can change it depending on what you have in the kitchen! The result is an easy, cheesy bake that makes use of any odds and ends kicking around in your fridge!

Ingredients

  • 14 oz (400 g) Bread I used Hot Dog Buns in the recipe - see notes below
  • 1 ½ Cup (170 g) Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • 1 Cup (200 g) Sliced Ham
  • 4 (4) Large Eggs
  • 1 Cup (240 ml) Heavy Cream
  • 1 tbsp (1 tbsp) Dijon Mustard
  • Salt and Pepper

Instructions

  • Roughly cut the bread into 2 inch cubes. Put half of these into a greased 9x9" square pan (you can use any pan that will fit all the bread).
  • Sprinkle over the sliced ham and half the cheese. Top with the remaining bread.
  • In a small bowl, or glass measuring jug, whisk together the eggs, cream, mustard, and some salt and pepper.
  • Pour this mixture over the bread. Top with remaining cheese. Cover with foil and place in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 365℉/185℃.
  • Place the dish into the oven, bake for 15 minutes, then remove the foil and let bake for a further 15 minutes, until the top looks golden. Remove and serve while still warm!

Notes

Bread - You can use any type of bread, but note that slightly stale bread works best as it soaks up the egg mixture better.
Ham/Cheese - Use whatever varieties you prefer here, or what you need to use up.
