What Are Espresso Cheesecake Brownies? 🍰
Espresso Cheesecake Brownies are a layered dessert made from two classic favourites.
The base is a dense, chocolatey brownie with a rich cocoa flavour. It’s topped with a smooth cheesecake mixture that’s flavoured with espresso, creating a creamy layer with subtle coffee notes that complement the chocolate beautifully.
The cheesecake is lightly swirled into the brownie batter before baking, creating a marbled finish that’s both beautiful and delicious.
The finished brownies have three distinct textures:
- Fudgy chocolate brownie
- Smooth, creamy cheesecake
- Slightly crisp edges
Every bite is balanced, indulgent, and packed with flavour.
Why Chocolate and Espresso Work So Well Together ☕
Chocolate and coffee have long been one of baking’s best combinations.
Espresso doesn’t simply make desserts taste like coffee. It also enhances the chocolate flavour, making brownies taste deeper, richer, and more complex.
The cheesecake layer softens the intensity of the espresso while adding a light, creamy contrast to the dense brownie underneath.
The result is a dessert that feels indulgent without becoming too sweet.

Beginner Baking Tips 👩🍳✨
If this is your first time making layered brownies, don’t worry.
The recipe is very forgiving, especially if you keep a few tips in mind.
Use room temperature cream cheese
Softened cream cheese mixes much more smoothly and helps prevent lumps in the cheesecake layer.
Dissolve the espresso first
Mixing espresso powder with a little hot water helps distribute the flavour evenly throughout the cheesecake.
Don’t overmix the brownie batter
Once the flour is added, stir only until everything is combined. This helps keep the brownies soft and fudgy.
Swirl gently
Less is more. A few gentle swirls create beautiful marbling without blending the two batters together.
Let them cool completely
Cooling allows both layers to finish setting, making the brownies much easier to slice neatly.

Why You’ll Love the Cheesecake Layer 🤍
The espresso cheesecake layer transforms an ordinary brownie into something special.
It adds:
- Creaminess
- Tangy flavour
- Moisture
- Beautiful visual contrast
- Smooth texture that balances the rich brownie
Instead of feeling heavy, each bite becomes lighter and more balanced thanks to the cheesecake.
Serving Suggestions 🍽️
These brownies are delicious on their own, but they also pair wonderfully with a few simple additions.
Try serving them with:
- Fresh whipped cream
- A dusting of cocoa powder
- Chocolate shavings
- Fresh raspberries
- Vanilla ice cream
- A hot latte or cappuccino
They’re particularly lovely as an after-dinner dessert with coffee.
Troubleshooting and Common Mistakes 🚨
Even beginner-friendly recipes can sometimes present challenges. Here are the most common issues and how to avoid them.
My brownies turned out dry
Overbaking is usually the culprit. Brownies should still have a few moist crumbs on a toothpick when removed from the oven.
My cheesecake layer cracked
This often happens if the brownies are baked too long or the cheesecake mixture contains too much air. Mix only until smooth and avoid overbeating.
My cheesecake is lumpy
Cold cream cheese is usually to blame. Let it soften at room temperature before mixing.
My espresso flavour is too weak
Use espresso powder rather than instant coffee whenever possible. Espresso powder delivers a stronger flavour without adding extra liquid.
My espresso flavour is too strong
Espresso should complement the chocolate, not overpower it. If you’re sensitive to coffee, slightly reduce the espresso powder while keeping the chocolate flavour rich.
My layers mixed together
Spread the cheesecake carefully over the brownie batter and swirl only a few times. Too much swirling will blur the layers.
My brownies won’t slice neatly
For clean squares, chill the brownies for at least an hour before cutting. Wipe your knife clean between slices.
Storage Tips ❄️
Because these brownies contain cheesecake, they should be refrigerated.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
- Serve chilled or allow them to sit at room temperature for 15 to 20 minutes before serving.
- Freeze individual slices for up to 2 months.
- Thaw overnight in the refrigerator for the best texture.
These brownies actually taste even better the following day as the coffee flavour develops further.
Perfect Occasions for Espresso Cheesecake Brownies 🎉
These brownies are suitable for almost every occasion.
They’re especially perfect for:
- Dinner parties
- Holiday gatherings
- Coffee mornings
- Bake sales
- Afternoon tea
- Birthday celebrations
- Mother’s Day
- Homemade gifts
Their elegant appearance makes them feel much more complicated than they actually are.
Why This Recipe Works 💡
Every layer has an important role.
The brownie base provides richness and deep chocolate flavour. The espresso enhances that chocolate while adding warmth and complexity. The cheesecake layer introduces a creamy texture and subtle tanginess that balances the sweetness beautifully.
Together, the layers create a dessert that feels indulgent without becoming overwhelming.
It’s the perfect combination of bold coffee flavour, creamy cheesecake, and classic fudgy brownies.

Happy baking! ☕🤎
For these Espresso Cheesecake Brownies, I use a basic 8′ square pan (I like this one). I also recommend a good stand mixer or high speed mixer (like this one) to make the brownie mixture. Espresso Cheesecake Brownies
Ingredients
- 100 g (½ cups) Dark/Semi-Sweet Chocolate Melted
- 170 g (¾ cups) Unsalted Butter Melted
- 100 g (½ cups) Light Brown Sugar
- 100 g (½ cups) Granulated Sugar
- 2 (2) Large Eggs
- 2 tsp (2 tsp) Vanilla Extract
- 80 g (⅔ cups) All Purpose Flour
- 30 g (6 tbsp) Cocoa Powder
For the Cheesecake Layer
- 225 g (1 cup) Full Fat Cream Cheese Room Temperature
- 50 g (¼ cups) Granulated Sugar
- 1 (1) Large Egg
- 2 tsp (2 tsp) Vanilla Extract
- 30 ml (3 tbsp) Strong Brewed Espresso (cooled)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 370℉/180℃. Line a 8″ square baking tin with greaseproof paper.
- Melt the dark/semi-sweet chocolate by breaking up into small pieces in a bowl and heating for 30 second intervals in a microwave, stirring in between. Set aside to cool whilst making the brownies. Alternatively, set up a double boiler. Do this by placing a heatproof bowl over a small pot of simmering water. Add the chocolate to the heatproof bowl and stir until melted.
- In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer combine the melted butter, and both the brown and granulated sugars on a medium speed until totally combined.
- Add the eggs and vanilla and mix again. Then check that the chocolate has cooled a little before adding in and combining.
- Add in the flour and cocoa powder and fold together. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
For the Cheesecake Layer
- Make the cheesecake layer by combining the cream cheese, sugar and egg. Whisk until smooth then add the cooled espresso and mix again. Pour this over the brownies. Use a spoon to create swirls.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes. The cheesecake may look a little wobbly but that is fine! Let cool before slicing and serving!
